Your Own Live News Truck Plus Social Conversations – Here’s How
Time 19:56
What if… No ifs about it, you can. As a corporate communications person, PR executive or marketer, you should be chomping at the bit to have your own live news truck. Just think, off to the scene of some speech by a senior executive, a product demo, major event that your company is sponsoring and you whip out a camera, throw up your antenna and upload a live feed.
Then you tap into the social commentary stream and engage in a dialogue by putting around that live video screen, a Twitter or Facebook feed with your appropriate hash tag, you know #Imageniusforthinkingofthislivestreamandchat or something shorter. It’s here and we did it on the #SxSw road trip.
Disclosure: Verizon Wireless was a client for this project and provided the devices, WIFI, and network. This was very, very cool.
Here’s what we did at a Tweet-up organized by Lisa Qualls the guest on this Marketing Edge podcast episode. We used a HTC Droid Eris for the video stream using the Ustream Broadcaster app we downloaded from the Android Market. We connected to the Verizon Wireless network on their MiFi 2200 device. That’s me holding the camera interviewing people around the table. Photo credit for the guy taking a picture of the guy taking video goes to Rick Mahn.

Then using a platform called Twitterface.com created by Qualls’ company Fresh ID we branded the event website and placed Twitter streams for our hash tage and following mentions of @albertmaruggi and my colleague @rickmahn on our way to South by Southwest. Below is a screen shot.

As a former broadcast news reporter this is nothing short of live broadcast feed capability that fits in your pocket. When you incorporate the ability to integrate social streams as you’ll hear in this conversation with Qualls, your mind starts thinking, “that would be great for…
- Product Launch
- Internal Communications
- Event sponsorships
- News Conference
Please add some of your ideas below and take a look at how Qualls used this live video and social engagement for other companies.

Albert,
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this conversation and share a little bit about what our application can do! Even though you’ve been working in the media space since we got our mail from horses, (LOL!!!) you are a true thought leader who knows how to challenge all of us to think about “how can we” instead of settling for status quo.
Something that grabbed me as I listened to this podcast was your comment about the $100,000 truck that is required for live satellite feeds today. Obviously there is a quality standard that comes with using high dollar production equipment and cameras, however there is a significant cost savings (not to mention accessibility) that is realized when we consider using a cell phone to capture real-time situations. As we discussed in the podcast, the possibilities are limitless as we stretch our innovative thinking, integrate technology into daily life and participate in the conversations that surround us. Thank you again, it was truly a pleasure! – Lisa

So since you mentioned the spectrum of quality I completely agree. In some cases that Droid 5 mega pixel camera will fit the bill others, well other times you want to get with one of my favorite shooters and use some intense gear.
One of my new favorites is @livethelushlife and @shotsandcuts Leo is the shooter on these productions from Lush Life http://lushlifeny.com/ I found them by tripping over a tweet from @livethelushlife and their site http://livethelushlife.com/ which covers the bar scene, mostly in NYC. What’s not to like right. But you have to check out this quick movie about Repeal Day. It’s less than a 2 minute piece with 20-30 money shots
thanks for commenting.

Albert, great post! We’ve been advocating that companies forget about getting most good-news events covered by mainstream broadcasters and just do it themselves. The videos we’ve produced for community events conducted by Walmart Stores in New Jersey have gotten hundreds of views and dramatically helped search visibility for the community groups benefitting from the events — and the stores themselves, judging by the number of phone calls we get from people finding the videos and looking for the store phone number.
More information on our video news wrapper service is at http://www.lubetkin.net/radio_news.html.

Steve you and I have the benefit of experience. We can see the power in this capability more than its novelty.
We are touching the tip of the iceberg here. It’s a concept that is gaining momentum spurred on by people like Brian Solis Putting the Public Back in Public Relations and David Meerman Scott The New Rules of Marketing and PR.
News is in the eyes and ears of the beholder. Thanks for the comment and the link. Also readers go to Steve’s link he has more resources for podcast music and such.
All the best Steve.
